PM Imran khan decides to crack down on the sugar mafia

The government decided to crack down on the sugar mafia and ordered the FBR, SECP, and FIA to investigate on the basis of the Sugar Commission report.

Barrister Shehzad Akbar, Advisor on Accountability and Home Affairs, wrote a letter to the Governor SBP, the Competition Commission, and the three provinces on the directive of the Prime Minister to take action against the sugar mafia. It has been asked to submit the implementation report in a day.

The federal government also wrote letters to the chief secretaries of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh asking them to investigate various sugar mills in view of the Sugar Commission report.

The letter said that legal action should be taken against the sugar mills which were buying sugarcane from sugarcane growers at low prices. According to the federal government, the matter of various sugar mills falls under the purview of the provincial anti-corruption department.

The federal cabinet had on June 23 approved an action plan against the sugar mafia and the government has asked the FBR to audit all sugar mills across the country.

The government has also directed the FBR to investigate the anonymous transactions of the sugar mills while the NAB has been asked to investigate the financial affairs of the sugar mills and owners in the wake of the cabinet decision.
