NADRA now allows you to trace your ‘family tree’ [PROCESS EXPLAINED]

A new system of online verification of family trees and the renewal of computerized national identity cards (CNICs) has been launched by the Nat­ional Database and Regis­tration Authority (Nadra). Under the latest system, Pakis­tani citizens can receive and verify the details of their family members via SMS on their mobile phones.

About the Online System

Nadra has introduced the IT-based solution for the online renewal of CNICs to minimize human interaction during the social distancing era as part of Covid-19 precautionary measures.

Speaking about the system, the official authority of Nadra said:

Under the system, a Pakistani can verify that no stranger or unrelated person is registered in their family; if there is any improper entry, they should report it [to] Nadra at the earliest.

The System will help detect Illegal Foreigners

Nadra has recently launched an awareness campaign titled “Your family is safe, Pakistan is safe”. Under the campaign, the authority is coming up with many initiatives to make the country a safer place.

It all started when Prime Minister Imran Khan visited the Nadra headquarters, where he discussed reports from the security establishment that foreigners were illegally living in Pakistan. They had obtained illegal CNICs which needed to be checked.

Nadra authorities suggested to the PM that innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence can be used to make Nadra’s database free of any false entries and to detect fake identity cards.

Following the discussion, this online system was developed to help the authority detect foreigners illegally living in Pakistan.

Verification Process

• Citizens can send an SMS to 8009, mentioning the family member’s CNIC number and its issuance date for example: <13 digit cnic> space <issue date dd-mm-yyyy>.
• The system will process the sent information.
• After verification, the sender will receive details of their family members.

The authority’s chairman Tariq Malik shared more guidelines in a statement and said:

If any information is incorrect or the name of a stranger or unrelated person is included in the family tree, write 1 and send the SMS to inform Nadra, or visit any Nadra Registration Centre to unregister that name. If the information is correct, write 2 and send the SMS to confirm the information.

The chairman further stated:

To avail of the verification and renewal service, it is necessary to register the SMS with Nadra from the same mobile number provided at the Nadra Registration Centre while seeking the ID card or “B” form. If your mobile number is not registered with Nadra, you can visit any Nadra center for registration or change of mobile number. This facility is provided free of cost at all Nadra Registration Centres.

Experts believe that the online verification system is another step towards Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Digital Pakistan initiative. Authorities are hoping that this system helps the government become successful in its aim of a safer Pakistan.
