About the Raksha Bandhan festival

The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Sravana (July/August). Raksha Bandhan celebrates the love of a brother and sister. On this day, sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers to protect them against evil influences and pray for their long life and happiness. And brothers present their sisters with a gift in return.

The Pakistani actress took to Instagram to share pictures and videos from the Raksha Bandhan celebration with her cook.

Here is a video the actress posted of the festival:

It should be noted that this isn’t the first time Sarwat Gillani has empowered the minority communities of Pakistan. Previously, she played the female lead in the drama serial Seeta Bagri, based on the Hindu community of Pakistan. The drama showcased Hindus in a positive light and endorsed the idea of them being patriotic Pakistanis.

When an assessment titled ‘Pakistan Freedom of Expression Report 2020’, Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) highlighted how miserably Pakistan performed in terms of freedom of expression, Sarwat Gillani was the first to speak up. The country scored 30 points out of 100 on the assessment Index, indicating that the state of freedom of expression remained poor over the past twelve months.

Sarwat Gillani took to Instagram to state:

We have been ranked in better titles before, but this is also very important. How will we express [ourselves] when we don’t know how to do it? As a society, we are not honest with ourselves but quick to judge others. We don’t know how to communicate with our children, spouses, parents, and among ourselves on social media.

The actress further stated:

When you want to change your society for the well-being of everyone, then you need ‘harkat for barkat’ in bringing the change yourself first. If we all take up one problem at a time and take up at least one cause and give it our voice, I can promise you we will be living in that better society, nation, and Pakistan that we talk about at dinners and get-togethers. God gave you a voice, be one for those who don’t have any. Let’s make The Dream come true.

Actress Sarwat Gillani has often been on the frontline when it comes to addressing problematic social issues in Pakistan. Pakistanis appreciate her for being an empowering voice for all.
